Welcome to Sajjanpur

Constraint cultivates creativity. It's not an easy task to make a film that's entertaining and at the same time has a social message but if someone successfully makes such a film then perhaps the whole purpose of cinema is fulfilled.

The movie is about Mahadev (Shreyas Talpade), an unemployed graduate who writes letters for his fellow illiterate villagers  for a living. The movie revolves around his life and the happenings in Sajjanpur like Panchayat elections (the movie isn't that dull as it sounds :P). Kamla (Amrita Rao), Mahadev's childhood friend uses his services to write letters to her husband, who has gone to Mumbai to work as a labourer. For his own objectives, he 'slightly' changes the words dictated by Kamla without her knowing and posts the letters. He keeps raising suspicions in Kamla's mind against her husband, who is blissfully unaware of Mahadev's intentions. The movie while being a light-hearted comedy includes social issues like widow-remarriage, unemployment, illiteracy, politics in elections, honour killings, superstitions, woes of the third gender and many others.

The movie has a fresh story to tell so it always keeps you hooked to it. Shreyas Talpade did a great job at his role and was always in his character. Amrita Rao did justice to the role of a village housewife who hasn't seen her husband for years. Ravi Kishan is seen as a compounder at the village dispensary who gets attracted to a widow and the daughter-in-law of  a retired Subedar(soldier). Yashpal Singh plays the role of Ram Singh, husband of the Sarpanch and an aspirant politician himself. Lack of education has no impact on his belief of him becoming a successful politician. Yashpal Singh's work is up to his usual high standards. Ravi Jhankal plays the role of a eunuch who decides to contest elections against Ram Singh's wife and his acting is commendable. Kudos to Shyam Benegal for directing this piece of serious comedy!
